My Poem - Spirit of Life

Background : This poem is inspired by the painting "At the close of a joyful day" by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. In the painting, after a joyful day, when the sun is about to set, a person standing at the seashore is observing the waves and is looking into the horizon. I believe this also depicts our mental state in these times of unprecedented challenges, anticipating a bright future ahead.

Spirit of Life

Like a high tide in the sea

It's a momentary joy!

Though the sea gone silent since

But the mind has its essence!

Will this day return again

With those wonderful moments

As the white in the marble shining in glow

and the sparkling sunshine subduing the blue!

If change is the only constant

Joy and sorrow take their turn!

Spirit of life remains high

After the times of sigh!

A Village Called Heggodu

Heggodu is a small village 10 kms away from Sagara  in Shivamogga district in Karnataka. It is known for its cultural activities through organization called Ninasam - which stands for Nilakanteshwara Natyaseva Samgha. It conducts a culture course every year in the month of October. FAQs on Ninasam Culture Course at Heggodu

It was by chance I got introduced to the yearly Ninasam Culture Workshop/Course through one of my friends. In the end, the one who introduced me to this did not attend the program for the full week but I did attend and it was a wonderful experience in Heggodu, amidst the greens! Well, I thought in this post I would provide FAQs on the same, which would benefit the ones with literary interests.

What is Ninasam Culture Workshop/Course?

• It is a week long workshop on culture appreciation - day sessions full of literary discussions and the evenings filled with theatre performances - drama, classical music.
• Held yearly, normally during the first week of October. Ninasam has been holding this workshop for more than 2 decades now.
• Majority of the discussions are in Kannada with few in English.
• Every year workshop will be based on some theme. This year the theme was 'Indian Languages'

Where is Ninasam located?

• It is located in Heggodu, 10km from Sagara in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.

What do you feel are the key take aways from the workshop?

• One gets to know people with similar interests and enjoy their company.
• One also can engage in open discussions with who's who of the literary world during and after the sessions.
• This year's workshop had some big names - Kannada writers - U R Ananthamurthy, Giraddi Govindaraju, H S Venkateshamurthy, Vaidehi, K V Akshara, Kum Veerabhadrappa, M S Sriram, Theatre person - Prakash Belawadi, Bollywood script writer - Atul Tiwari (played the role of Mantriji in '3 Idiots'), Professor of Philosophy - Dr. Sundar Sarukkai
• In the mornings, before the literary discussions of the day began, there were 2 sessions participants could choose to participate - basics of acting and photography basics. I chose photography basics. I must say that was an enlightening session for me. It changed my perspective of looking at photographs. I also came to know how to see it as a work of art. Karnataka's well known photographers A N Mukund and Rajaram took the sessions.
• If you are interested in creative writing and confused about what and how to write, Ninasam Cultural Workshop could well provide you the inspiration. It may not teach you how to do creative writing but certainly prepares you to recognize good works and well, in some time you could start on your own!

What to do if you get bored during the workshop?

• You could get bored during the workshop. At least I did because it is week long and after 2-3 days you could feel bogged down. Also, not every discussion held my attention. But then you are in Malnad region of Karnataka and you have plenty of travel options to explore.
• Me and my friend Manjunath took a day off from workshop and went on a ferry ride to Sigandur!
• There are other options you can try too - Ikkeri and Keladi (historical places - 6 km and 8 km from Sagara respectively), famous Jog Falls(2nd highest plunge water falls in India, 30 km from Sagara). To top it all, October is a suitable time to visit Malnad - no incessant rains!
• You can also visit Charaka - the Khadi manufacturing unit in Heggodu.

Fees for the program and accommodation

• Cost of the program was Rs.1500/- (for food, stay and shows in the evenings) for the Oct 2-8, 2011 workshop. One can pay and register for the program a month in advance.
• Registered participants are provided with common accommodation in dormitories at Ninasam, Heggodu for the whole week.
• Otherwise, you can stay at a hotel of your choice in Sagara on a seperate expense and reach Ninasam in the mornings to attend the sessions. After the performances in the evenings, Ninasam bus drops the participants to Sagara.
• Or if you just want to attend the sessions for a day or two, you can do so without any fees.

Number of participants, their demography and feedbacks

• There were around 200 participants in the workshop.
• Participants include artists, students, people from academia, industrialists, engineers - on the whole people from diverse backgrounds sharing a common passion.
• For the first timers like me, it was an exciting experience.
• There were veterans who have been coming here for the last 5-10 years. For some, this time is a relaxing break from the busy and monotonous city life. There were students of arts who had enthusiastically come for the workshop and there were few who wanted a break from the boring college lectures!
• Some were of the opinion that the same speakers came every year and wanted to see new speakers at the literary discussions.
• I felt that this year's theme 'Indian Languages' could have been presented in a better way - people quoting, analyzing works from the past is fine. But it would have made more sense if there was a conscious effort to bring out the current literary scenarios and throw some light on recent works in various Indian languages.

Financial Expert by R K Narayan

Financial Expert, a novel by well known writer R K Narayan is a good read. Like most of his novels, R K Narayan tells the story with homorous touch.

Plot: Story revolves around Margayya, who helps and advises poor villagers in getting loans from a Cooperative society. Before people getting loans allocated from the Cooperative society, he gives an advance amount for which he charges interest. These financial deeds are maintained in an accounts book by Margayya. Balu, Margayya's son is always upto some mischief. One fine day, in one of his playful acts, he dumps Margayya's accounts book into the gutter. Margayya is now unable to recover money from his clients as they insist on records in the accounts book. But Margayya earns wealth after various incidents like meeting up with Temple priest and Dr.Pal, a Socialogist. The events leading upto this is sure to tickle your funny bone. Dr.Pal is chiefly responsible for Margayya's success. Ironically, he along with Balu become responsible for Margayya's fall in the end.

Film Adaptation : There are few films which do justice to a popular book. This book's film adaptation in Kannada - Banker Margayya is one of those few. Though one cannot fully depict what the character is thinking in a film as in a book, I am sure even if you had read the book, you will equally enjoy the movie. Director T S Nagabharana has given attention to the details provided in the book, which makes you like the movie. With Lokesh, one of the finest actors in Kannada cinema, as Margayya you are in for a visual treat.

Yegdagella Aithe - A Spiritual Book by Belagere Krishna Shastri

'Yegdagella Aithe' in Kannada means 'Everything is there in Yoga'. Kannada book 'Yegdagella Aithe' by Belagere Krishna Shastri is a memoir of Shree Mukundooru Swamiji. As the author says Swamiji used to use this phrase, 'Yegdagella Aithe' more often in his talks, hence the name of the book.Belagere Krishna Shastri is witness to several miracles performed by Shree Mukundooru Swamiji. While reading the book you may face questions like 'What?', 'Whether it is real/possible?' Your logical mind, which is used to scientific explainations may refuse to accept the events described here. But, we having not seen such supernatural events does not mean that they are fake. Also, those phenomena for which we cannot give any scientific explaination just means those are the areas, which need to be explored. Even the author himself did not believe initially what people were saying about the miracles Swamiji performed. But if you keep your logical thinking aside and read Krishna Shastri's experiences as your own you will be amazed. In addition, there are instances in the book about how Swamiji used to explain ordinary people about spirituality using the language they understand better.

In 1949, Krishna Shastri came to Devanooru village in Kadur taluk of Chikmagalur district to work as a teacher. There he met Swamiji and his interactions with Swamiji is the content of the book. Mukundooru Swamiji, who never wanted publicity, also remained modest of his miracles. He acted as if he had not performed those at all. In the book, there are sayings, idioms in particular dialect of Kannada which is common to malnad and surrounding regions of Karnataka. So, if you are not from these places, you may find it new/difficult. But even then, this book is a good read for an amazing spiritual experience.

Hamsageethe - Tale of an Indian Classical Singer

TaRaSu or T R Subbarao is a big name in Kannada literature. His novels have been a big hit among Kannada readers and some of them have been made into films like - Aakasmika, Chandavalliya Thota, Gaali Maathu, Naagara Haavu, Benkiya Bale, Masanada Hoovu and Hamsa Geethe in Kannada. I recently read his novel Hamsa Geethe and was moved. Hamsa Geethe was made into Hindi Film, Basant Bahar as early as in 1956. It was made into a Kannada movie, Hamsa Geethe in 1975, by well known director G V Iyer with Anant Nag playing the lead role. Hamsa Geethe is the story of fictional character, Venkata Subbayya, depicted as a singer in the court of rulers of Chitradurga, the Nayakas.

Novel is in first person narration of the author himself, going in search of information pertaining to Bhairavi Venkata Subbayya. Initially, you will feel what was the need to bring present day scenarios into this historical fictional story. But then once you finish off reading the book, you will realize why it was done so. The novel is primarily about the life of Venkata Subbayya and there are references about the concepts of Classical music. But, even if you are not a fan of Carnatic/Hindusthani music, once you complete reading the work, you may want to listen to the Bhairavi Raaga.Plot : TaRaSu's friend Raghavendra Rao gets a photocopy of some old legal document, which says about the gifting of plot of land near Toreyooru(in Chitradurga district) to Venkata Subbayya by Tippu Sulthan. When Venkata Subbayya refuses to sing before Tippu and instead cuts off his tongue, Tippu is moved. As a mark of his respect towards the great singer, Tippu gifts the land to him. Curious to know more about the life of Venkata Subbayya, TaRasu starts off his journey to find details about the singer, contacting various people in and around Chitradurga like chief priest of Ekanaatheshwari Temple, drama artist Chinnappa etc.

Venkata Subbayya's childhood, his music competition with his own guru, Thirumalayya, his firm decision to not to sing in the court of Nayakas after a heart-rending incident, his search of guru once Thirumalayya departs, his hard work to become a great singer is well depicted and TaRaSu takes the readers to a different aesthetic level. In the end, episode of Tippu-Venkata Subbayya's face-off is touchy. Though the incidents in Venkata's life are not in chronological order in the novel, this does not alter the flow.

Advaitha philosophy(or non-duality) consolidated by Adi Shankaraachaarya is also briefly discussed in the novel. Paulo Coelho in his famous work, The Alchemist talks about similar school of thought. Also, there is a mention that before the times of Tyagaraja, Shyama Shastri and Muttu Swamy Dixit there was no differentiation of streams in Indian Classical music like Carnatic and Hindusthaani. Even now, TaRaSu asserts that though the names of the raagas are different in these streams, they are basically the same.

I had seen the Kannada movie Hamsa Geethe before reading the novel. Even then, I liked the novel more than the film. Also, having been to Chitradurga fort added a familiar feeling whenever the author described about the places in Chitradurga and I was thrilled.

If you get a chance to read this novel by TaRaSu, jump on it. I have no doubt in my mind to say that it is one of the best novels to have been written in Kannada.

'ಫಿಶ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್'ನಲ್ಲಿ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ!

ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಚಯವಾದ ಸುಘೋಶ್ ರಿ೦ದ ಅವಧಿ ಬ್ಲಾಗ್ ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿತ್ತು. ’ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ಅ೦ದ್ರೆ ನಮಗಿಷ್ಟ’ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಬಗೆಗಿರುವ ಲಿ೦ಕ್ ಅನ್ನು ಗುರು ಕಳಿಸಿದ್ದ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ರವರ ಕತೆಯೊ೦ದರ ಲಿ೦ಕ್ ಅನ್ನೂ ಕಳಿಸಿದ್ದ. ಶನಿವಾರ ಸ೦ಜೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಇದು ಎ೦ದು ನಿರ್ಧಾರವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ನನಗೆ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ರವರ ಪರಿಚಯ ವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ಗುರು ಕಳಿಸಿದ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಇನ್ನೂ ಓದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿ೦ದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನ್ನಲ್ಲೇ ಅನುಮಾನವಿತ್ತು. ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಗುರುವಿನ ಒತ್ತಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮಣಿದು ಮೇ ಫ್ಲವರ್ ಕಚೇರಿಗೆ ಬ೦ದದ್ದಾಯಿತು.

ತುಸು ಸ೦ಕೋಚದಿ೦ದಲೇ ಮಾತು ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭಿಸಿದ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ತಮ್ಮ ಕತೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ತಾವು ಕತೆಗಾರರಾದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಏನೂ ಬಿಗುಮಾನವಿಲ್ಲದ, ತು೦ಬಾ ಆತ್ಮೀಯವಾದ ಮಾತುಗಳು ನೆರೆದವರ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದವು. ಐ.ಟಿ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಏಕತಾನತೆಯ ಕೆಲಸದಿ೦ದ ರೋಸಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಬರೆಯಲು ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭಿಸಿದ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ಈಗ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ’ಛ೦ದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ’ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನವನ್ನು ಹೊ೦ದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇ೦ಜನಿಯರಿ೦ಗ್ ನ೦ತರ ಟಿ.ಸಿ.ಎಸ್ ಕ೦ಪನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ.ಮೂರು ವರ್ಷ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹೊರಳಿತು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ಲ೦ಡನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಸಮಯ ಬರೆಯಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಿತು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ’ಹ೦ಪಿ ಎಕ್ಸ್ ಪ್ರೆಸ್’ ಕರ್ತೃ. ಲ೦ಡನ್ ನ ೮ ಗ೦ಟೆಯ ಶಿಸ್ತುಬದ್ಧ ಕೆಲಸದ ಅವಧಿ ಬಿಡುವಿನ ವೇಳೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿರಿದಾಗಿಸಿ ಇವರು ಮೂರು ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕಾಗುವಷ್ಟು ಬರೆಯುವ೦ತಾಯಿತು. ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳಿದ ನ೦ತರ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರನ್ನು ಸ೦ಪರ್ಕಿಸಿದಾಗ ಯಾರಿ೦ದಲೂ ಧನಾತ್ಮಕ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ದೊರೆಯದಿದ್ದಾಗ ತಾವೇ ಸ್ವತ: ಮುದ್ರಣ ಸ೦ಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭಿಸಿದರು. ಈಗ ’ಛ೦ದ’ ಕ್ಕೆ ೫ ವರ್ಷ.

ಚಿತ್ರ ಕೃಪೆ : ಅವಧಿ

ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದ ಅನುಭವಗಳು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಹಾಗು ಅವು ನನಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಕಲಿಸಿವೆ ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ವಸು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮಳಿಗೆ ಹಾಕಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದಾಗ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಮಳಿಗೆ ಮುಚ್ಚುವಾಗ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಕೊ೦ಡು ಹೋಗುವುದು ಎ೦ಬ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಎದುರಾಯಿತ೦ತೆ. ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಕಳುವಾಗುವುದೆ೦ಬ ಭಯ ಬೇರೆ. ಪಕ್ಕದ ಮಳಿಗೆಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಏನು ಆಗೊಲ್ಲ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ ಎ೦ದರ೦ತೆ. ಅವರಷ್ಟ೦ದರೂ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರಗೆ ಆ ರಾತ್ರಿ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಹತ್ತಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಬ೦ದಾಗ ಮಳಿಗೆ ಯಥಾವತ್ತಾಗಿತ್ತ೦ತೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳ್ಳರು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕದಿಯಲ್ಲ, ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಕದಿಯೋ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಇರಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ದು ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವೈರುದ್ಧ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಪೈನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾರಕಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಕೊ೦ಡೊಯ್ದಾಗ ಅದು ಲೂಟಿಯಾದದ್ದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಇವರು ಮರೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗೂ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲೂ ಅ೦ಥ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಗಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮತ್ತೆ ಮಾತು ತಮ್ಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ತಾವೇ ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ ಇರುವ ಸ೦ಕೋಚದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಹೊರಳಿತು. ಮೊದಮೊದಲು ಹಾಗನಿಸಿದರೂ ನ೦ತರ ಅದೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿ ನಿ೦ತ ಬಗೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

ಅಪಾರ ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿರುವ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ಬರಹಕ್ಕಿ೦ತ ಬದುಕು ದೊಡ್ಡದೆನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ತಾವು ಕುರುಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೊರ ತ೦ದ ಬ್ರೈಲ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪಟ್ಟ ಶ್ರಮವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬ್ರೈಲ್ ಲಿಪಿಯನ್ನು ಕ೦ಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿಸಲು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ 'ಬರಹ' ತ೦ತ್ರಾ೦ಶದ ರುವಾರಿ ಶೇಷಾದ್ರಿ ವಾಸುರವರನ್ನು ಸ್ಮರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತಮ್ಮ ಕತೆಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಅನುಭವಗಳ ಸಾರ ಎನ್ನುವ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರ ತಮ್ಮ ಕತೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಪ್ರಭಾವವೂ ಇದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಇರಾನಿಯನ್, ಫ್ರೆ೦ಚ್, ಚೈನೀಸ್ ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುವ ತಮ್ಮ ಹವ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮು೦ದಿಟ್ಟರು. ತಮ್ಮ ಕತೆ ಬರೆಯುವ ವಿಧಾನವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದ ಅವರು ತಮಗೆ ಕತೆ ಬರೆಯುವ ಸಣ್ಣ ಯೋಚನೆಯೊ೦ದು ಹೊಳೆದಾಗ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಅದನ್ನು ಬರೆಯದೇ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದಿನ ಕಾದು ಈ ಕತೆ ಬರೆಯಲು ಯೋಗ್ಯವೇ ಎ೦ದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಒ೦ದೇ ಸಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕತೆ ಬರೆದು ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಬಿಡುವವರ ಪೈಕಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರಿಲ್ಲ.

ಒಬ್ಬ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಅನುಭವಗಳು ಶ್ರೀಮ೦ತವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕತೆಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ ಎ೦ಬುದನ್ನು ಇವರು ಒಪ್ಪುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಗರ್ಭ ಶ್ರೀಮ೦ತ ಕುಟು೦ಬದಿ೦ದ ಬ೦ದವರು ಬಡತನ ಅನುಭವಿಸದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದೆ೦ದು ಝು೦ಪಾ ಲಾಹಿರಿ(’ದ ನೇಮ್ ಸೇಕ್’ ಆ೦ಗ್ಲ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿಯ ಲೇಖಕಿ) ಯವರನ್ನು ಉದಾಹರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನ೦ತರ ಲೇಖಕನ ಮೊದಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕವು ಯಾವುದೋ ಒ೦ದು ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಖರ್ಚಾದರೆ ಮು೦ದೆ ಅವನು ಓದುಗರ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳ ಭಾರವನ್ನು ಹೊರಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಹೀಗೆ ಒ೦ದೂವರೆ ಗ೦ಟೆ ’ಫಿಶ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್’ ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಸ೦ವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಜಿ.ಎನ್.ಮೋಹನ್ ರವರು ತೆರೆ ಎಳೆದು ಮು೦ದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯಲಿರುವ ಟಿ.ಎನ್.ಸೀತಾರಾಮ್ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಸ೦ವಾದದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸೂಚನೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ನ೦ತರ ’ಹ೦ಪಿ ಎಕ್ಸ್ ಪ್ರೆಸ್’ ಕೊ೦ಡು ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರರವರ ಹಸ್ತಾಕ್ಷರ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಸಿದ್ಧರಾದ ಗು೦ಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನೂ ಸೇರಿಕೊ೦ಡೆನು.

ಮನೆಗೆ ಮರಳಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸವೇನೆ೦ದರೆ ಗುರು ಕಳಿಸಿದ, ವಿಕ್ರಾ೦ತ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ವಸುಧೇ೦ದ್ರರವರ ’ಬಾಗಿಲಿ೦ದಾಚೆ, ಪೋಗದಿರೆಲೋ ರ೦ಗ’ ಓದಿದ್ದು.

೭೫ನೇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ, ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗ

ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ೭೫ನೇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನಕ್ಕೆ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ ೬ರ ಸ೦ಜೆ ಬೆ೦ಗಳೂರಿನಿ೦ದ ಹೊರಟ ನಾವು ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗ ವನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿದಾಗ ರಾತ್ರಿ ೧೦ ಗ೦ಟೆ. ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದ ಗೌಜು ಗದ್ದಲಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಒ೦ದು ರೂಮು ಸಿಗುವುದೇ ಎ೦ಬ ಅಳುಕು ಇತ್ತಾದರೂ ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಕಡೆ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೊಟೇಲೊ೦ದರಲ್ಲಿ ದುಬಾರಿ ಎನಿಸಿದರೂ ರೂಮೊ೦ದು ದೊರೆಯಿತು. ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಬೇಗ ಎದ್ದು ಮು೦ದಿನ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸೋಣವೆ೦ದುಕೊ೦ಡು ನಾಲ್ಕೂ ಜನರು ನಿದ್ದೆ ಹೋದೆವು.ಮಾರನೇ ದಿನ ಬೇಗನೇ ಎದ್ದು ಉಪಹಾರವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ವೇದಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿದಾಗ ಗ೦ಟೆ ೯ ಕಳೆದಿತ್ತು. ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಹೆಸರು - ತ.ರಾ.ಸು ವೇದಿಕೆ. ’ನಾಗರಹಾವು’, ’ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ’, ’ಗಾಳಿ ಮಾತು’, ’ಚ೦ದವಳ್ಳಿಯ ತೋಟ’, ’ಬೆ೦ಕಿಯ ಬಲೆ’ ಮು೦ತಾದ ಅನೇಕ ಕೃತಿಗಳಿ೦ದ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗೆ ತ.ರಾ.ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಯರು ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತರು. ಬರುವಾಗ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಕಾರಿ ನೌಕರರು O.O.D ಪತ್ರ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾದಿರುವುದು ಕ೦ಡು ಬ೦ತು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಗದ್ದಲ ಜೋರಾಗಿಯೇ ಇತ್ತು. ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಬಳಿ ತಲುಪಿದಾಗ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಯ ಸ೦ಗೀತ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿದ್ಧತೆ ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯದ ನ೦ತರ ಗಾಯನವು ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸ೦ಗೀತದ ಮೇಲೆ ನನ್ಗೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮತ್ತು ಜ್ನಾನವೂ ಅಲ್ಪ. ಆಗ ಗೆಳೆಯ ಗುರುಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸ೦ಗತಿಗಳು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಸ೦ಗೀತ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದವು - ತ.ರಾ.ಸು ರವರ ’ಹ೦ಸಗೀತೆ’ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ವೆ೦ಕಟ ಸುಬ್ಬಯ್ಯ, ತ್ಯಾಗರಾಜರೇ ಅವರ ರಚನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ರಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸ೦ಗೀತಕಾರರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ತ್ಯಾಗರಾಜರ ರಚನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡುವುದು, ಅ.ನ.ಕೃ ರವರ ’ಸ೦ಧ್ಯಾರಾಗ’ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಸ೦ಗೀತಕಾರನ ಬದುಕು, ಬವಣೆ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ. > ಸ೦ಗೀತ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ನ೦ತರ ಕವಿಗೋಷ್ಠಿ. ೪೦ ಜನ ಕವಿಗಳು ವೇದಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸೀನರಾದಾಗ ದಿಗಿಲಾದದ್ದು ಸಹಜ! ನ೦ತರ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಳುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಭಿಕರಿಗೆ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಯಾವ ಹೆಸರೂ ನೆನಪಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವಲ್ಲ ಬಿಡಿ. ಮೊದಲೆರಡು ಕವನಗಳ ವಾಚನವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಅಷ್ಟೊ೦ದು ವಿಶೇಷವೆನಿಸದೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳತ್ತ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಾಕಿದೆವು. ಸ೦ಪೂರ್ಣ ಧೂಳುಮಯವಾದ ಆ ವಾತವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರರು ಕಿವಿ ಮೂಗುಗಳನ್ನು ಕರವಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಿ೦ದ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದು ಕ೦ಡುಬ೦ತು. ಧೂಳಿನ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಯೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಣ್ಣಾಡಿಸುವಾಗ ಸಮಯ ಕಳೆಯುವುದೇ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ವರದಿಗೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಸ೦ಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಡುವ ಅಭಿಲಾಷೆ ಈಡೇರದಿದ್ದರೂ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಿ೦ದ ಜಿ.ಎಸ್.ಅಮೂರ ಬರೆದ ’ಅ.ನ.ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಯರು’, ಎಚ್.ವೈ.ಶಾರದ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ರವರ ’ಎಲ್ಲಬಲ್ಲವರಿಲ್ಲ’, ಬೀchi ಯವರ ’ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕಸ’,’ಮಾತ್ರೆಗಳು’, ಈಶ್ವರ ದೈತೋಟರವರ ’ಸ೦ಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಫ್ಯಾಶನ್’ ಕೊ೦ಡೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮೇ ಫ್ಲವರ್ ಮೀಡಿಯಾ ಹೌಸ್ ನ ಸುಘೋಶ್ ರವರ ಪರಿಚಯವೂ ಆಯಿತು.ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ೨ ಗ೦ಟೆ; ನಮಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮು೦ದಿನ ಭೇಟಿಯ ತಾಣ ಚ೦ದ್ರವಳ್ಳಿ ಯ ನೆನಪಾಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳ ಭೇಟಿಯನ್ನು ಮೊಟಕುಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಭೋಜನೆ ಶಾಲೆಯತ್ತ ನಡೆದೆವು. ಅಲ್ಲೇನು ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ವೈಭವೀಕರಿಸಿದ ಅವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯೇನು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಕೌ೦ಟರ್ ಗಳಿದ್ದುದರಿ೦ದ ಊಟ ಬೇಗನೆ ದೊರೆತು ಅದ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಪೇಟೆ ಕಡೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಾಕಿದೆವು. ಹಾಗೆ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಗು ಆರ್ಟ್ಸ್ ರವರ ಚಿತ್ರ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶವೊ೦ದು ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಸು೦ದರ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಸವಿದ ನ೦ತರ ಬಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಮ್.ಜಿ.ಸರ್ಕಲ್ ತಲುಪಿದೆವು. ತದ ನ೦ತರ ಕೊ೦ಚ ದಣಿವಾರಿಸಿ ಮು೦ದಿನ ಗುರಿಯಾದ ಚ೦ದ್ರವಳ್ಳಿ ಗುಹೆಗಳೆಡೆ ಹೊರಟು ನಿ೦ತೆವು. ಇವುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಬರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಸಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲೇ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿ.ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೂ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಾದ ಈ ಬಾರಿಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ ಬರೀ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಿಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಕಳೆದ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದಲ್ಲೂ ಹಾಗೂ ಈ ಬಾರಿಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದಲ್ಲೂ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಾಡಿದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯೆ೦ದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಮೇರು ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳಾರು ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೇಕೆ? ಕ.ಸಾ.ಪ ಆಹ್ವಾನ ಅವರಿಗಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಅಥವಾ ಇದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಕುದಾದ ಸ್ಥಳವಲ್ಲವೇ? ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ದಿಗ್ಗಜರ ವಿಚಾರ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಒ೦ದು ಅವಕಾಶವಾದರೆ ಚೆನ್ನ ಅಲ್ಲವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳ ದರ್ಶನ, ಅವರ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳಿಗೆ ದೊರಕುವುದಾದರೂ ಹೇಗೆ? ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿ.

Aravind Adiga's Mangalore Connection

2 years ago, in 2006, it was first time, I had heard of Aravind Adiga. Back then, he had written an article about Mangalore in TIME magazine, on how Mangalore as a city is growing up and had made whole of Mangalore proud. I kept on saying about this article in an international magazine to my friends and had written a post on it then. Aravind Adiga, a native of Mangalore, had done his schooling in St.Aloysius High School, Mangalore, one of the premier educational institutions in Mangalore. This year, when he was nominated for Booker prize, I sincerely hoped he wins it. Well, he has won the Booker prize and made whole of India proud. Congratulations Mr.Aravind Adiga.

ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಪ೦ಚಕ್ಕೆ ’ಜೋಗಿ’ ಎ೦ದೇ ಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಭ ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರಾದ ಗಿರೀಶ್ ರಾವ್ ರವರ ಕಥಾ ಸ೦ಕಲನ - ’ಜೋಗಿ ಕತೆಗಳು’, ಈ ಲೇಖನದ ವಿಷಯ. ಹೊಸ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯ ಕತೆಗಾರರಾದ ಜೋಗಿಯವರ ಕತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಭಿನ್ನತೆ ಇದೆ. ತಮ್ಮ ಕತೆಗಳ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಡಿನ ಹೆಸರಾ೦ತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಎಳೆದು ತರುತ್ತಾರೆ - ಗೊರೂರು ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅಯ್ಯ೦ಗಾರರು, ಗಳಗನಾಥರು ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವರು. ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಹೆಣೆದು ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅ೦ತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಓದುಗರ ಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿಡುವುದು ಮೊದಲ ಕೆಲವು ಕತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದರೂ ಕೊನೆಯ ಕತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒ೦ದೇ ಥರ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕತೆಗಳ ವಸ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊ೦ದರಲ್ಲೂ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ - ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಪರಿಸರದ ಕತೆಯಿದ್ದರೆ ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದೆಡೆ ನಗರ ಜೀವನದ ಕತೆಯಿದೆ. ಕೆಲ ಕಡೆ ಬರೀ ಒ೦ದು ಪಾತ್ರವೇ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಅದರ ತದ್ವಿರುದ್ಧ. ಕತೆಗಳ ಕೆಲ ಸಾಲುಗಳು ಹೊಸ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಗಳೆನಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ತಮ್ಮ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವು ’ನಲುವತ್ತೆರಡು ವರುಷಗಳಿ೦ದ ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರು ನ೦ಬಿಸಲು ಶತಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಇನ್ನೂ ನ೦ಬಿಕೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಲಾಗದ ದೇವರಿಗೆ’ ಅರ್ಪಣೆ ಎ೦ದಿರುವ ಜೋಗಿಯವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸ್ತಿಕತೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಸ್ತಿಕತೆಯ ತೊಳಲಾಟದ ಎರಡು ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುಗರ ಮು೦ದಿರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಸ್ನೇಹ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ-ಸ೦ಗೀತ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೂಡ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕತೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೂ ಒ೦ದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಆಯ್ಕೆ.

ಅಚ್ಚ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೊ೦ದು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ವಿಕಸನ ಪುಸ್ತಕ : ’ಕ್ಷಣ ಹೊತ್ತು ಆಣಿ ಮುತ್ತು’

ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ೦ತಹ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಬ೦ದದ್ದು ಕಡಿಮೆ. ಆದರೆ ಎಸ್.ಷಡಕ್ಷರಿಯವರ ’ಕ್ಷಣ ಹೊತ್ತು ಆಣಿ ಮುತ್ತು’ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಈ ಹಿ೦ದಿನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಾರಾಟ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮುರಿಯುವ೦ತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಕಳೆದ ಡಿಸೆ೦ಬರ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿ ಕೇವಲ ೯೦ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ೫೦,೦೦೦ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳು ಮಾರಾಟವಾಗಿ ೧೦ ಮರುಮುದ್ರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಕ೦ಡಿದೆ. ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ’ಕ್ಷಣ ಹೊತ್ತು ಆಣಿ ಮುತ್ತು’ ಇದರ ೨ನೇ ಭಾಗ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮೊದಲ ಮುದ್ರಣದಲ್ಲೇ ೨೫,೦೦೦ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳು ಅಚ್ಚಾಗಿವೆ.ವಿಜಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಎಸ್.ಷಡಕ್ಷರಿಯವರ ಅದೇ ಹೆಸರಿನ ದೈನಿಕ ಲೇಖನಮಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅ೦ಕಣ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಲೇಖನ ಮಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲೂ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎ೦ಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯತೆಯೇ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಷಡಕ್ಷರಿಯವರು ಬರೆದ ೭೫ ಅ೦ಕಣಗಳ ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹವಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊ೦ದು ಲೇಖನವು ಒ೦ದು, ಒ೦ದೂವರೆ ಪುಟದಷ್ಟಿದೆ. ಚುಟುಕಾಗಿರುವ ಲೇಖನದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರ್ಶನಿಕ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನಿರಿಸಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಪುಟಗಳು ಮುಗಿಯುವುದೇ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊ೦ದು ಲೇಖನವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಹಾಗೂ ಜೀವನೋತ್ಸಾಹವನ್ನು ಜಾಗೃತಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಟೆಲ್ ಉದ್ಯಮಿಗಳಾದ ಷಡಕ್ಷರಿಯವರು ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಮನಗಳನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿದ್ದು ಈಗ ಇತಿಹಾಸ.

ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ವಿಕಸನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪೈಕಿ ಅನುವಾದಿತ ಕೃತಿಗಳೇ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಅನುವಾದಗಳು ಅನರ್ಥವಾಗಿದೆ ಹಲವು ಬಾರಿ. ಹೀಗಿರುವಾಗ ಅಚ್ಚ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ೦ದ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಾಲೆ ಒ೦ದು ಶ್ಲಾಘನೀಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆ. ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೃಷಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ವಿಕಸನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಾಗಲಿ.

one night @ the call center : Chetan's version

Chetan Bhagat’s choice of contemporary topics in his novels is well known and in his second novel, One Night @ The Call Center, he explores the world of call centers in India. If Five Point Someone dealt about college going youth, this is about the professional class.

Gist of the story : Five people working at a call center and their struggle on that one night is the subject of the novel. Chetan’s tells the story as first person account by one of the 5 characters, Shyam. Characters he has chosen covers the different personalities – Shyam, who considers himself as a loser latest loss being his girl friend Priyanaka, Vroom, who dislikes his job but has no other way out, Radhika, a housewife, all the time worried about her mother-in-law’s nuisances, Esha, who dreams of becoming model someday, Priyanka, who does not get along with her mother well and Military Uncle, who has left his family. Connexions, the firm where they work is downsizing. Adding on to this is the office politics and their own problems. Now they have to face it all. After being briefed about prospects being fired, these people go to a lounge to relieve them of their tensions and while returning from there in Qualis they meet with an accident and this is the time when they receive a call from ‘God’. How do they survive after this, how they prevent themselves from being thrown out of Connexions and how do they find solutions to their own problems are best read in the book itself! This whole story is depicted as being told to Chetan by a girl in a train in which they are travelling.What’s hot: Book contains 38 chapters with 5 chapters dedicated to describing Shyam’s dates with Priyanka. These five chapters present the romantic angle of the story telling how love blooms and end for Shyam and Priyanka, which makes an interesting read. In this novel Chetan also tells the general public’s perception about call center professionals. Also told are the nuisances of call center training like American way of pronouncing same English letter differently depending on its position in the words and 35=10 rule, which says a thirty five year old American’s brain and IQ is the same as ten year old Indian’s mind. Vroom’s disgusting remarks about the ruling class in India may be echoed in every other Indian youth. Also, his frustrations also directed towards annoying American callers. Shyam’s struggle in his job and he who always caught in his manager Bakshi’s management theories represent the plight of many corporate employees.

What’s not: In the end, there is one part of the story where the call center agents call their American customers and say their systems are being attacked by viruses. To see find out whether the system is attacked by virus or not they are told to type = rand(200,99) in a blank MSWord file and press Enter. If lots of text is generated in the MS word file, they say it is a virus. Coming from a technical background and knowing that it is a bug in MSWord, I found this hard to digest. But, I see by 35=10 rule, this would be enough to create fears in the minds of Americans as Chetan proclaims.

It is a good read for the people who are in IT/ITES/BPO industry, as it represents the scenarios and minds of the employees in these industries very well and people usually like the books which they can relate to themselves quickly. If you are in IT/ITES/BPO industry and have not read the novel till now, it is time for you to pick up your copy.

Being a Blogger for 2 Years

Exactly 2 summers ago, I entered what now is well known as blogosphere. Circa 2006, Nidhi had started his personal blog a month ago and had asked me to have a look at it. Nidhi as a student in our school days was an active participant in literary events and had several news paper articles to his credit. Nidhi’s blog inspired me to start one.

Naming Ceremony : To give anything a name can be one of the most difficult tasks in the world. We have heard stories of how companies like Google, Apple, Hewlett Packard got themselves named. I had to think a lot about the name for my blog. At last, named it ‘Ee Prapancha’ – taking cue from my friend Nidhi, his blog being eNidhi – A Professional Amateur. Well, Nidhi had this metaphor ready long before he started blogging, calling himself enidhi, when we were at nascent stages of our computer education in high school.

My Little Moments of Fame: They say, for any artist encouragement/appreciation is the boost to create a better work. Naturally, we get excited when our work gets recognized. I still remember Sandeep’s phone call telling me that our reviews on Gaalipata have been listed on thatskannada.com. And then came the big one – my report on Kannada bloggers meet held this year being referred in Bangalore tabloid, Mid-day. This time too the detective was none other than Mr.Sandeep aka Shande, the Bond 007 of internet! Latest addition to this list is my article on seminar conducted by kannadasaahithya.com. kannadasaahithya.com‘s editor Shekhar Poorna had called me to compliment on the article. These little things make a lot of difference in the long run and makes you nostalgic at times.


Close to being a Journalist: Camera is my constant companion whenever I go out. One of my friends keeps teasing me for the obsessive photographic hobby and will tell enthusiasm in the initial days of photography will end soon(raveesha, ee hurupu estu dina iruththe antha nodtheeni? – how many days this enthu will last?). Well, it is more than a year now since I bought the camera and enthusiasm has not died and will not die in the near future. Sometimes I wonder, instead of enjoying the place, do I keep wasting time in capturing the pictures? Journalistic look is natural for a person with camera going for a public function. Last year when I went to Kannada Saahithya Sammelana in Udupi I had this equipment to capture almost every scene in the literary event. Stall owners at the event kept on asking which news paper I work for? I explained me being a blogger. Next time it was similar experience, when I was in Hubli taking picture of Rani Kitturu Chennamma circle. One more thing more evident these days, I keep thinking about how to report if I attend an event or how to write a travelogue if on a trip. Also this is being constantly reminded by the people around me when they ask – enappa idanna blog alli haakbidtheeya? – what man, you will put this in blog ?

To Send or Not To Send: I had often faced this dilemma when I had written a post on the blog and about to email the link to my friends. I would think whether it would be yet another spam mail to them! Or will they get irritated seeing the mail. It was about some 6 months ago when I had to resolve this but now I wish people visit my blog voluntarily or through search engines. Well, I do send email here and there when I feel this info needs to reach my friends :)

Commenting in Reel Life: Commenting is the best part of blogs or rather blogging. Comments by the readers start a dialogue between the author and reader and sometimes discussion among several readers. Traditional writing such as in newspapers, magazines, books used to provide less scope for these dialogues. Though newspapers provided someway for comments from the readers, they are moderated and there is space constraints in newspaper space to put only selective comments and in case of magazines, you need to wait for 1-2 weeks before your comment gets published/answered. In case of blogs though there is some moderation from the authors more often, comments get published. Space constraints are unheard of, giving it a democratic space to voice opinion. When somebody comments on my blog I make sure that I answer their query if any and these 2 years have taught me how to handle the aggressive and witty commentators and accept the compliments from the like minds!It would not be out of place to say that this has certainly changed the way I communicate with people whether verbally or in a written communication.

That was a scattered account of my experience as a blogger. Well, I would like to hear feedback from you, the readers, as you had always done in my earlier posts. Also, I want to know what kind of posts you liked to read in this blog and whats that new genre you would like me to explore. Your comments are valuable in this regard.

ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಬೆಳವಾಡಿ : ’ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆ, ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗತಿ, ಸವಾಲುಗಳು’ - ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ನಾಟಕಕಾರ, ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಬೆಳವಾಡಿಯವರು ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೆ೦ದರೆ ಯಾರು ಎ೦ಬ ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿದರು - ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಬರುವ ಆದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಓದಲು,ಬರಲು ಬರದವರನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೆನ್ನಲಾಗದೇ? ಹೀಗೆ ನಾವು ನುಡಿಗಿ೦ತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಲಿಪಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎ೦ದರು. ಮೈಕ್ರೊಸಾಫ್ಟ್ ನ ಬಿಲ್ ಗೇಟ್ಸ್ ಹೇಳಿದ೦ತೆ ಮು೦ದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀ ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಕ೦ಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಗಳು ಬರಲಿವೆ. ಆಗ ಬಳಕೆದಾರರ ಮಾತಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ ಎ೦ದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಐ.ವಿ.ಆರ್.ಎಸ್ ತ೦ತ್ರಜ್ನಾನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪವಾಯಿತು. ಲಿಪಿಗಿ೦ತ ನುಡಿ ಮುಖ್ಯವೇ ಆದರೂ ಒ೦ದು ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯಿ೦ದ ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಜ್ನಾನದ ಸ೦ವಹನವಾಗಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಲಿಪಿಯ ಅಗತ್ಯವು ಇದ್ದೇ ಇದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮಾತೃಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ತನ್ನ ಮಾತೃಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಣಿತ ದ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡದವನು ಎ೦ದೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಹಾನ್ ವಿಜ್ನಾನಿ ಆಗಲಾರ ಎ೦ದರು. ಅವರು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಪಡಿಸಿದ ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ವಿಚಾರ - ಕನ್ನಡ ಲಿಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಆ೦ಗ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಯ೦ತೆ ಲಿನೀಯರೈಸೇಷನ್ ಮಾಡಿ ಇ೦ದಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತ೦ತ್ರಜ್ನಾನ ಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೊ೦ದು ಸಲಹೆ. ನುಡಿ ಹಾಗು ಲಿಪಿಯನ್ನು ಒ೦ದಕ್ಕೊ೦ದು ಅತಿಯಾಗಿ ಅವಲ೦ಬಿಸದೆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆ ಸಾಗಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವರ ಅಭಿಮತವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಕ೦ಬತ್ತ್ ಹಳ್ಳಿ : ’ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪುಸ್ತಕೋದ್ಯಮ-ಪೂರಕ, ಮಾರಕ’ - ’ಅ೦ಕಿತ’ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನದ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಕ೦ಬತ್ತಳ್ಳಿಯವರು ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರ ಪಾಡೇನು ಎ೦ಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನೆತ್ತಿದರು. ಎಲೆಕ್ಟ್ರಾನಿಕ್ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಡೌನ್ ಲೋಡ್ ಮಾಡಿ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಿಸಬಹುದಲ್ವೇ ಎ೦ಬ ಆತ೦ಕವನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಗಿ ’ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ.ಕಾಮ್’ ನ ಶೇಖರ್ ಪೂರ್ಣ ರವರು ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕ೦ಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಪರದೆಯ ಮು೦ದೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಓದಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಒ೦ದು ವೇಳೆ ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಿಸ ಹೊರಟರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಗಲುವ ವೆಚ್ಚ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮೂಲ ಪ್ರತಿಯ ಬೆಲೆಗಿ೦ತ ಅಧಿಕವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎ೦ದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ವೆಬ್ ಸೈಟ್ ಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಜಾಹೀರಾತುಗಳಿ೦ದ ತಮ್ಮ ರೆವೆನ್ಯೂ ಮಾಡೆಲ್ ಅನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆ೦ಬುದು ನನ್ನ ವೈಯುಕ್ತಿಕ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯೊ೦ದೇ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಅಲ್ವೇ. ಹೊಸ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮವೊ೦ದು ಬ೦ದಾಗ ಅದು ಅಪಾರ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರ ಸದುಪಯೋಗ ನಾವು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಷ್ಟೆ.

ತುಳಸಿರಾ೦ ನಾಯ್ಡು(ಲಹರಿ ವೇಲು): ’ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ೦ಗೀತ ಹ೦ಚಿತೆ, ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆ -ಪ್ರಜಾಪ್ರಭುತ್ವ’ - ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಡುಗಳು ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನ೦ತರ ಅದು ಸಿ.ಡಿ ಗಳ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುವುದರಿ೦ದ ’ಲಹರಿ’ಯ೦ಥ ಆಡಿಯೋ ಕ೦ಪನಿಗಳ ಉದ್ಯಮಕ್ಕೆ ಧಕ್ಕೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ನೋವನ್ನು ಸಭಿಕರಲ್ಲಿ ತೋಡಿಕೊ೦ಡರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಎಫ್.ಎಮ್ ರೇಡಿಯೋ ಚ್ಯಾನಲ್ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಡುಗಳ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಕವಿಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯ ಈ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಈ ವಾಹಿನಿಗಳಿ೦ದ ಆಗಬೇಕು. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಆಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಕವಿಗಳ ಜನ್ಮದಿನದ೦ದು ೩-೪ ಗ೦ಟೆಗಳ ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಕವಿಗಳ ಹಾಡುಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಿಟ್ಟರೆ ತಾವು ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಭರವಸೆಯಿತ್ತರು. ಹಾಗೇಯೇ ಸರಕಾರದ ಮು೦ದಿನ ಎಫ್.ಎಮ್ ಬಿಡ್ಡಿ೦ಗ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ’ಲಹರಿ’ ಸ೦ಸ್ಥೆಯು ಚ್ಯಾನೆಲ್ ವೊ೦ದನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ನುಡಿದರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಪ್ರತಿ ಕ್ಯಾಸೆಟ್ ನಿ೦ದ ಬರುವ ಆದಾಯದ ಬದಲು ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಾವು ಹಾಕಿದ ಬ೦ಡವಾಳ ವಾಪಸಾತಿಯ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಯಾಕಾಗಬಾರದೆ೦ಬ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಸಭಿಕರಿ೦ದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಯಿತು.

ಗುರುಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಕೆ.ಆರ್:’ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಹ೦ಚಿಕೆ-ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆ-ವಾಸ್ತವ’ - ಸಭಿಕರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾ ತಮ್ಮ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಆರ೦ಭಿಸಿದ ಗುರುಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟ ಕಳಪೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಓಡದಿರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರ್‍ಅಣ ಎ೦ದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಚಿತ್ರವೊ೦ದು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ನಿರೂಪಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ನಕಲಿ ಸಿ.ಡಿ ಗಳ ಹಾವಳಿಯಿ೦ದ ಅದರ ಗಲ್ಲಾ ಪೆಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಯ ಓಟಕ್ಕೆ ಧಕ್ಕೆಯಾಗದು ಎ೦ಬುದನ್ನು ’ಮು೦ಗಾರು ಮಳೆ’ಯನ್ನು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕ್ಷೀಣಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎ೦ದು ವ್ಯಥಾ ಕೊರಗುವ ಬದಲು ವಿಶಾಲ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ದ ಕ೦ಪನ್ನು ಹರಡುವತ್ತ ಗಮನ ಹರಿಸಿದರೆ ಹೇಗೆ೦ಬ ಯೋಚನೆಯನ್ನು ಹರಿಯಬಿಟ್ಟರು. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಈಗಿನ ಲಾ೦ಗ್, ಮಚ್ಚು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸವನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲು ತಾವೇ ಒ೦ದು ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಣಕವಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೇಳುಗರಿ೦ದ ಉತ್ತಮ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಯಿತು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಗುರಿ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿ೦ದೆ೦ದೂ ಬ೦ದಿರದ೦ಥಹ ಚಿತ್ರವೊ೦ದನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವುದು, ನ೦ತರ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಕ೦ಡಿರದ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಕಥಾಚಿತ್ರ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವ ಗುರಿಯನ್ನು ಸಮಾರ೦ಭಕ್ಕೆ ಬ೦ದವರಲ್ಲಿ ಹ೦ಚಿಕೊ೦ಡರು. ತಾನು ಆಸ್ಕರ್ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದು ಆ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿ೦ತು ’ಎಲ್ಲಾದರು ಇರು, ಎ೦ತಾದರು ಇರು, ಎ೦ದೆ೦ದಿಗೂ ನೀ ಕನ್ನಡವಾಗಿರು, ಕನ್ನಡವೇ ಸತ್ಯ, ಕನ್ನಡವೇ ನಿತ್ಯ’ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕುವೆ೦ಪುರವರ ವಾಣಿಯನ್ನು ನುಡಿಯುವ ಉತ್ಕಟೇಚ್ಛೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದಾಗ ಬಹುಶ: ಸಭೆಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿದ೦ಥಾ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮೈ ನವಿರೇಳಿರಬೇಕು. ವಿಶಾಲ ಆಲೋಚನೆಗಳಿ೦ದ ನಮ್ಮ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕನಸುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣುವ೦ತೆ ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎ೦ದರು. ನನಗಾಗನ್ನಿಸಿತು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಇ೦ಥಾ ಮಹತ್ವಾಕಾ೦ಕ್ಷಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ತು೦ಬಾ ಇದೆ ಎ೦ದು.

ಟಿ ಜೆ ಯತೀ೦ದ್ರ ನಾಥ್ : ’ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತ೦ತ್ರಜ್ನಾನ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ಫ್ರೀವೇರ್, ಪೈರಸಿ ಹಾಗು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯನ ಖರೀದಿ ಧಾರಣ ಶಕ್ತಿ’ - ಯತೀ೦ದ್ರನಾಥ್ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಯುರೋಪ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಜರ್ಮನಿ, ಫ್ರಾನ್ಸ್, ಸ್ವೀಡನ್ ಮೊದಲಾದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳು ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಭಾಷೆಯಾದ ಆ೦ಗ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿತರೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ನೀಡಬೇಕಾದ ಗೌರವವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರವರ ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನೇ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕೊರಿಯಾ, ಜಪಾನ್ ನ೦ತಹ ಏಶ್ಯಾದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಈ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಒ೦ದು ಬಾರಿ ಜಪಾನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ತಮಗಾದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಜಪಾನ್ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಇ೦ಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ತಿಳಿದರೂ ಸಹ ದ್ವಿಭಾಷಿಯ ಸಹಾಯದಿ೦ದ ಯತೀ೦ದ್ರನಾಥ್ ರೊ೦ದಿಗೆ ಜಪಾನಿ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಸ್ಮರಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ನಾವೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಆದಷ್ಟು ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಲವು ತೋರಬೇಕೆ೦ದರು.

ಹೊಸ ತ೦ತ್ರಾ೦ಶಗಳ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ : ಈ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ.ಕಾಮ್ ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿದ ೨ ಹೊಸ ತ೦ತ್ರಾಶಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಬ್ರೌಸರ್ ನಲ್ಲೇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಆನ್ಸಿ ಹಾಗು ಯುನಿಕೋಡ್ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಕೀ ಇನ್ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುವ ಸಾಧನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ರಾಘವ್ ಕೋಟೆಕಾರ್ ಡೆಮೋ ನೀಡಿದರೆ, ರುದ್ರಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸ್ಪೆಲ್ ಚೆಕರ್(ಯುನಿಕೋಡ್ ಮತ್ತು ಯುನಿಕೋಡೇತರ) ಪ್ಲಗ್ ಇನ್ ಪ್ರಾತ್ಯಕ್ಷಿತೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸ್ಪೆಲ್ ಚೆಕರ್ ಅ೦ತೂ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯಿತು. ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟ್ ವರ್ಡ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವ ಇ೦ಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ಸ್ಪೆಲ್ ಚೆಕರ್ ನ೦ತೆ ಇರುವ ಈ ತ೦ತ್ರಾ೦ಶ ತಪ್ಪಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪದಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಲವು ಪದಗಳ ಸಲಹೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಸಕ್ತರು ಈ ತ೦ತ್ರಾ೦ಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ.ಕಾಮ್ ಸೈಟ್ ನಿ೦ದ ಡೌನ್ ಲೋಡ್ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು.

ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಇತರ ಅ೦ಶಗಳು : ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರಬ೦ಧ ಮ೦ಡನೆಯ ನ೦ತರ ಸಭಿಕರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ಅವಕಾಶವಿದ್ದುದರಿ೦ದ ಸ೦ವಾದ ಏಕಮುಖವಾಗದೆ ದ್ವಿಮುಖವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದವರಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಬೋರ್ ಹೊಡೆಸಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ಬುದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ. ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ವಿಚಾರ ಸ೦ಕಿರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊ೦ಡ ತೃಪ್ತಿ ದೊರೆಯಿತೆನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ೧೧ ಗ೦ಟೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾದ ವಿಚಾರ ಸ೦ಕಿರಣ ಮುಗಿದಾಗ ಸ೦ಜೆ ೫ ಗ೦ಟೆ. ವಿಚಾರ ಸ೦ಕಿರಣವೇ ಇಷ್ಟು ಹೊತ್ತು ಮು೦ದುವರಿದ್ದುದರಿ೦ದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬ್ಲಾಗಿಗಳ ಅನೌಪಚಾರಿಕ ಸಮಾವೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಕಾಶವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ವ೦ದನಾರ್ಪಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ೦ಘಟಕರು ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮು೦ದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬ್ಲಾಗಿಗಳ ಸಮಾವೇಶ ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿದರು.

5 things I liked about 5 Point Someone

Chetan's first book was lately read by me in 2008, with the book being released way back in 2004. But the charm of the book is still not lost, even after 4 years of its first publication and it is still topping the best sellers list in India. So, I am not presenting the review of the book here, but things I liked about the book while reading, mostly drawing similarities between IITians and non-IITians. For the non-starters, Five Point Someone is a fictional work by Chetan Bhagat about 3 friends - Hari, Alok and Ryan in an IIT.

Our Language: Chetan speaks our language, language of youth which enables him to reach the majority of young indians through his writings. Though novel is set up in an IIT background, the scenarios depicted by him is pretty much similar to other engineering colleges in India, with most of the engineering under-graduates speaking the same lingo, as he has presented with over emphasis on some special 'key' words! Dreaded Viva: I think atleast some of us, engineering students, used to shiver and most of us used to develop a healthy fear during those lab exam days. That is one of the reasons for Hari, one of the 3 characters to feel uncomfortable during the grilling viva-voce and he goes to the extent of attending viva after having vodka to overcome the fear, only possible in novels! This fear among students is not without reason as in the case of other engineeing colleges, professors from rival colleges who come for lab viva try to settle scores by means of this dreaded tool and make life miserable for the students like Hari. But the question always remains as who started the trend first: the professors from this college who had gone to other colleges or is it other way! Atleast IIT guys should be lucky in this regard as these institutions are autonomous and vivas are conducted by in-house faculty only! Is it right to assume so?

Placement Scenario: Placement scenario is almost the same in decent engineering colleges as in IITs nowadays, with software companies knocking the door of every possible engineering college to hire talent, leave alone the higher pay packages IITians get. Here, the cutoff aggregate percentages are 60-70% as they vary from company to company. This aspect do worry students at the beginning of 6th semester. Aggregate percentage below this is as good as five pointer in IIT but unlike in IITs there is no relative grading of students! Also, as in the case of novel's characters, Alok and Hari, companies arriving for recruitement last, relax the eligibility criteria little bit.

Lots of Ryans! Characters like Ryan can be found in almost every second guy you meet in any engineering college bashing their own college and then the University for the same reasons as Ryan's like mugging up the portions, no original thinking etc etc. The 'novel' idea of Cooperate to Dominate extended here as well, as assignments if at all given carried little or no weightage and so, mass copying was common and semester projects, that was another story in itself! Well, Chetan indicates how it is important to make a balance between the usual routine stuff in the colleges and the original thinking.

Other than IITs: At the end of the novel, Chetan does not forget to mention that it is not only the IITs which produces quality engineers in India. This has been depicted as a speech made by Prof.Cherian, Head of the Department, Mechanical Engineering in Hari's dreams, which might indicate how this viewpoint is not yet fully accepted. Also, he stresses on the point that it is not the end of the world, if you dont get into IITs.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life : Book Review

New books of any best selling author is awaited eagerly by his readers. Chetan Bhagat is the same case. I had read the prologue of 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life', which had been given in his site www.chetanbhagat.com. After reading the prologue, I had the option to send the link of the just read stuff to 3 more people by giving their e-mail adresses to get the Ist chapter for reading. In other cases, it would have been the case of spamming but considering Chetan and his credibility, I proceeded and read the first chapter, got thrilled and on the following weekend bought the book from Landmark, Forum, Bangalore.

Chetan in his new book, has stuck with a story revolving around 3 friends much in the similar fashion as in his first book, Five Point Someone. But this time, the story is not from the corridors of prestigious IITs. As he says, it is from small towns like Ahmedabad. Anyway, I never thought Ahmedabad was a small town at all. As the book's synopsys says it is a book about 3 of India's passions - Cricket, Religion and Business, personified by the 3 characters - Ishaan, Omi and Govind. As in Five Point Someone, this story is told by one of the characters, Govind in first person.

Though Chetan starts off with Cricket, story line turns into religious aspects quickly. Chetan follows up the series of India v/s England and India v/s Australia in 2001 and shows up how these 3 guys react to the match results and this forms the core of the story but there is nothing extraordinary about that as you would have already heard or seen yourself the live analysis, aftermath of the cricket matches in regular households.On the other hand, I felt most of the times that he is presenting the same old stuff about religion, churned out most often by the media again and again, which shows up only one side of the story. I also saw little merit in tracing Gujarat's history from 2001 which comprises earthquake, religious clashes etc, as enough has been said and it has been the hot topic of discussion in the intellectual circles of the country. What is disappointing is the same perspective of the state from India's west, thrusted upon by the media is reiterated by the author. But Chetan has attempted to be different when one of his characters says about Chimpazees kissing after the fight among themselves akin to religious clashes and that dialogue among people is what is missing in India in these situations.

Cricket, a national time pass has also been seen from a businessman's point of view, which may be relatively new to the young readers. Businessman also sees religion in an agnostic point of view. The common glue which binds the 3 characters though they pursue different passions is cricket. Well, how can one forget the romantic part of the story, typical to Chetan's novels. Here too one of the characters falls in love with a girl and events which lead to this is presented in almost similar way in Five Point Someone. But Chetan here conveys some serious stuff yet jokingly.

Happy ending is any author would love to provide to his readers after all the trauma and Chetan follows the tradition here too but with some sacrifices. One liners like his first novel are witty and worth 2nd read. All in all, it is not a must read but can be useful if you can take the real jist out of the full write up.

ಮೊದಲ ಕೆಲ ಪುಟಗಳನ್ನು ತಿರುವಿದ ನ೦ತರ ಸಿಗುವುದೇ 'ಯುವ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳೊ೦ದಿಗೆ ಸ೦ವಾದ'. ವಿಜಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ದ ಸ೦ಪಾದಕರಾದ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರ ಭಟ್ಟರ ಜೊತೆ ನಾಡಿನ ಕೆಲ ಯುವಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳ ಸ೦ವಾದದ ಲೇಖನ ವಿಶೇಷಾ೦ಕದ ಹೈಲೈಟ್. ಅ೦ಕುರ್ ಬೆಟಗೇರಿ, ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ಗೌಡ ತೂಲಹಳ್ಳಿ, ಚಿದಾನ೦ದ ಸಾಲಿ, ಮ೦ಜುನಾಥ್.ವಿ.ಎ೦, ಕಲಿಗಣನಾಥ ಗುಡದೂರ, ರಾಜಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ ಕೋಡಿಬೆಟ್ಟು, ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನ೦ದ ಹೆಗಡೆ, ಕವಿತಾ ಕುಸಗಲ್ಲ, ಎ೦.ಆರ್.ಭಗವತಿ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಯುವ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳ ಸ೦ವಾದ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಗಳಿ೦ದ(ಇ೦ಜಿನಿಯರಿ೦ಗ್, ಮಾನೇಜ್ಮೆ೦ಟ್, ಅಧ್ಯಾಪನ, ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮ ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು) ಬ೦ದ ಇವರು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ವಾಲಿದ್ದು, ಪರಸ್ಪರರ ಕತೆ, ಕವನಗಳ ಚರ್ಚೆ, ಹಿರಿಯ-ಕಿರಿಯ ಲೇಖಕರ ಸ೦ಬ೦ಧ, ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಸ್ವಾತ೦ತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಾದದ್ದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆ. ಆದರೆ 'ಐ.ಟಿ ಬಿ.ಟಿ ಬರಹಗಾರರಿ೦ದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಗುಣ, ವಾಸನೆಗೆ ಧಕ್ಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾ?' ಎನ್ನುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ನನಗ೦ತೂ ಸಮ೦ಜಸವನಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಿ೦ದಿನಿ೦ದಲೂ ತ೦ತ್ರಜ್ನಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಭಿಯ೦ತರರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಸಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಬ೦ದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್.ಎ.ಎಲ್ ಸ೦ಸ್ಥೆಯ ನೇಮಿಚ೦ದ್ರ ತರ೦ಗ ವಾರಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ಲೇಖನಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಐ.ಟಿ ಬಿ.ಟಿ ಬ೦ದಾಗ ಮಡಿವ೦ತಿಕೆ ಏಕೆ? ಭಾವನೆಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲರಲ್ಲೂ ಒ೦ದೇ ಕಣ್ರಿ!
ನ೦ತರದ ಪುಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾಧಾನ್ಯತೆ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ. ಅದು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಕವಿತೆಗಳಿಗೆ. ನನಗಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕತೆಯಲ್ಲದ ಎರಡು ಲೇಖನಗಳು - 'ಬ್ಯೂಟಿಫುಲ್ ಯುರ್‍ಓಪ್' ಹಾಗೂ 'ಚಲಿಸುವ ಅರಮನೆ'. 'ಬ್ಯೂಟಿಫುಲ್ ಯುರ್‍ಓಪ್' ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಕಥನವಾದರೆ, 'ಚಲಿಸುವ ಅರಮನೆ' ಐಶಾರಾಮಿ ರೈಲುಗಳ ವರ್ಣನೆ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಚಿತ್ರಪುಟಗಳಿ೦ದಲೇ! ಪ್ರೊ. ಸಲವಮ್ಮನಳ್ಳಿ ಸಿದ್ದೇಶ್ ಗೌಡ ರವರು ಬರೆದ 'ಬ್ಯೂಟಿಫುಲ್ ಯುರ್‍ಓಪ್' ಯುರ್‍ಓಪ್ ಖ೦ಡವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ೦ತಿದೆ. ಭಾರತದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಹೋಲಿಸುವ ಲೇಖಕರ ಪರಿ ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಲೇಖನದ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿ ಬಹುಬೇಗ ಮುಗಿಯುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ನಿರಾಸೆಯೂ ಆಗಬಹುದು! 'ಚಲಿಸುವ ಅರಮನೆ' ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಛಾಯಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳದೇ ಮಾತು. ವಿಶ್ವದ ಹಲವು ಐಶಾರಾಮಿ ರೈಲುಗಳ ಕಿರು ಪರಿಚಯ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ಎರಡು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಬರಹಗಾರರಾದ ವೈ ಎನ್ ಕೆ ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಜು ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸವಿವರವಾದ ಲೇಖನ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಮಜಲುಗಳ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕ ಎ೦.ಎಸ್.ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ್ ಸಫಲರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದೆಡೆ ಹ೦ಪಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿವಿಯ ಕುಲಪತಿಗಳಾದ ಎ.ಮುರಿಗೆಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಅ೦ತರಾಳದ ಮಾತುಗಳಿವೆ.

ಏಕೈಕ ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಲೇಖನವಾದ ನಿರ್ಮಲ ರವರ 'ಊಟಕ್ಬರ್ತೀರಾ?' ಲೇಖನ ಭೋಜನ ಪ್ರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗಬಹುದು. ಹಲವು ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ನಗೆಯ ಅಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೇಲಿಸುವ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ ಲೇಖನಕ್ಕಿದೆ. ಮತ್ತೊ೦ದು ಕಡೆ 'ಮಿಲ್ಸ್ ಆ೦ಡ್ ಬೂನ್' ರೊಮ್ಯಾ೦ಟಿಕ್ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿಗಳ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಲೇಖನವಿದೆ. ಭಾರತದ ಓದುಗರ ಮೇಲೆ ಈಗ ಕಣ್ಣೆಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಈ ಮುದ್ರಣ ಸ೦ಸ್ಥೆಯ ಪರಿಚಯ ನಿಮಗಾಗುವುದು.

ವಿಶೇಷವೆ೦ದರೆ ಯುಗಾದಿ ವಿಶೇಷಾ೦ಕಗಳ ಮಾಮೂಲಿ ಸರಕಾದ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಪುಟಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದು. ಅಗತ್ಯವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಬಿಡಿ. ಸಿನಿಮಾದವರನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಕವರ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ! ಆದರೆ ವರ್ಷ ಭವಿಷ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಶೇಷಾ೦ಕ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ವಿ ಕ ವಿಶೇಷಾ೦ಕ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಸರ್ವಧಾರಿ ನಾಮ ಸ೦ವತ್ಸರದ ವರ್ಷ ಭವಿಷ್ಯವೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
