Om - The Beginning

‘Om’ was one film I was waiting to watch from a long time, since I had not watched the movie when it first got released. Though released 13 years ago in 1995, video and TV rights of the movie are still with movie makers. So you get to watch the movie only when it is showed in some theatre in Bangalore. I went to watch this movie on thursday in Pramod talkies, Vijayanagar. In the last 13 years it has been re-released 5 times and each time the response had been tremendous and critics call it a master piece. It is the film which gave new image to Kannada hero, Shivaraj Kumar and super star status to director Upendra. It also marked the emergence of Prema, who after this venture went on to become No.1 heroine in the Kannada film industry. Om literally was the beginning of an era. It was probably the first film in India to be based on underworld dons. After this only came the bollywood version of gangster movies like Satya, Company, Vaastav. The film was remade in all south Indian languages and also in Hindi as ‘Arjun Pandit’ with Sunny Deol taking up the lead role. Om Kannada film poster

Plot: Movie begins with a journalist interviewing and publishing the stories of Bangalore gangsters presenting the circumstances which lead them to become so. ‘Om’, is a book which she authored and she gives it to three gangsters which tells the story of a gangster - Satya alias Satyamurthy(Shivaraj Kumar), coming from a poor family, is a soft spoken guy studying in a college. He is made fun of in the college and is a subject of constant humiliation. Madhuri(Prema) is being woed by a man whose brother is a gangster. Madhuri does not care and makes Satya fall in love with her. Unable to bear this, the man brings his brother to settle score with Satya. Madhuri turns to Satya, provokes him to take on the gangster. Satya in rage beats up the gang and Madhuri makes sure that Satya gets arrested by the police. Satya gets released and comes to know that Madhuri is taking revenge on him – circumstances had lead Satya to lie in the court to save his family, as result of which Madhuri’s brother gets convicted and commits suicide. Satya is not accepted in his house as well and the only door open to him is to join the underworld. But he still loves Madhuri even though she does not love him. In the latter part, Madhuri is faced with similar situation as of Satya and realizes her mistake and wants Satya to come out of underworld. But the underworld who Satya is a part refuses to leave him. Well that was story being read by three gangsters who realize that the last pages of the book 'Om' are missing and eager to know what happened to Satya in the end and meet the author. The journalist takes them to Satya, who had left underworld is now handicapped and runs a small hotel and is happy in his life. Film ends saying how one can never be happy as a gangster and the three gangsters promise to put down their arms as well. Upendra, real star of Kannada cinemaSongs: Songs are important ingredients of any film to become hit and Om had it in plenty, thanks to the lyrics by Upendra and music by Hamsalekha. If ‘Om brahmaananda omkaara’, ‘O Gulaabiye’, ‘Collegeu Kumaru’ became hit among the masses, ‘Mehabooba’ was for the front rows crowd. Dr.Rajkumar had lended his voice to songs ‘Om brahmaananda omkaara’ and ‘O Gulaabiye’, which even today sung in orchestras in Bangalore. To get the full lyrics of the all the all songs of Om click here. To listen to the songs of ‘Om’ click here(

Highlights: ‘Om’ can be easily judged as one of the best performances by Shivaraj Kumar. He had to don both roles – first as soft spoken guy and then as hard talking gangster. Dialogues are another factor which made film a hit. To hear the complete story of film ‘Om’ click this link of Another aspect which became talk of the town was its awesome screenplay. Of course, how one can forget the direction by Upendra? Upendra had presented the human side of gangsters and had sent a message in the movie. After ‘Om’, he directed ‘A’ and ‘Upendra’ and then put an end to his directorial ventures. Kannada film fans would like to see him wear the director’s cap soon. Uppi, are you listening?

Aftermath: Gangster movie trend which started with ‘Om’ still continues in Sandalwood. Numerous movies have come after ‘Om’ based on gangster theme, no movie tasted success as ‘Om’ did. The film which come close to ‘Om’ in success may be Shivaraj Kumar starrer, Prem directed ‘Jogi’. Since ‘Om’ was fresh in its theme it become a huge hit but the same theme is being overused and now every other hero introduced in Gandhinagar holds a macchu in his hand and most producers place their buck on gangster movies to make quick profit. This also had made Kannada film audience stop coming to theatres. But now with films like ‘Mungaaru Male’, ‘Gaalipata’, ‘Cyanide’, ‘Milana’ this has changed a bit. I wish that this machchu or gangster era in Gandhinagar would end soon.

Being a Blogger for 2 Years

Exactly 2 summers ago, I entered what now is well known as blogosphere. Circa 2006, Nidhi had started his personal blog a month ago and had asked me to have a look at it. Nidhi as a student in our school days was an active participant in literary events and had several news paper articles to his credit. Nidhi’s blog inspired me to start one.

Naming Ceremony : To give anything a name can be one of the most difficult tasks in the world. We have heard stories of how companies like Google, Apple, Hewlett Packard got themselves named. I had to think a lot about the name for my blog. At last, named it ‘Ee Prapancha’ – taking cue from my friend Nidhi, his blog being eNidhi – A Professional Amateur. Well, Nidhi had this metaphor ready long before he started blogging, calling himself enidhi, when we were at nascent stages of our computer education in high school.

My Little Moments of Fame: They say, for any artist encouragement/appreciation is the boost to create a better work. Naturally, we get excited when our work gets recognized. I still remember Sandeep’s phone call telling me that our reviews on Gaalipata have been listed on And then came the big one – my report on Kannada bloggers meet held this year being referred in Bangalore tabloid, Mid-day. This time too the detective was none other than Mr.Sandeep aka Shande, the Bond 007 of internet! Latest addition to this list is my article on seminar conducted by‘s editor Shekhar Poorna had called me to compliment on the article. These little things make a lot of difference in the long run and makes you nostalgic at times.

Born To Blog
Close to being a Journalist: Camera is my constant companion whenever I go out. One of my friends keeps teasing me for the obsessive photographic hobby and will tell enthusiasm in the initial days of photography will end soon(raveesha, ee hurupu estu dina iruththe antha nodtheeni? – how many days this enthu will last?). Well, it is more than a year now since I bought the camera and enthusiasm has not died and will not die in the near future. Sometimes I wonder, instead of enjoying the place, do I keep wasting time in capturing the pictures? Journalistic look is natural for a person with camera going for a public function. Last year when I went to Kannada Saahithya Sammelana in Udupi I had this equipment to capture almost every scene in the literary event. Stall owners at the event kept on asking which news paper I work for? I explained me being a blogger. Next time it was similar experience, when I was in Hubli taking picture of Rani Kitturu Chennamma circle. One more thing more evident these days, I keep thinking about how to report if I attend an event or how to write a travelogue if on a trip. Also this is being constantly reminded by the people around me when they ask – enappa idanna blog alli haakbidtheeya? – what man, you will put this in blog ?

To Send or Not To Send: I had often faced this dilemma when I had written a post on the blog and about to email the link to my friends. I would think whether it would be yet another spam mail to them! Or will they get irritated seeing the mail. It was about some 6 months ago when I had to resolve this but now I wish people visit my blog voluntarily or through search engines. Well, I do send email here and there when I feel this info needs to reach my friends :)

Commenting in Reel Life: Commenting is the best part of blogs or rather blogging. Comments by the readers start a dialogue between the author and reader and sometimes discussion among several readers. Traditional writing such as in newspapers, magazines, books used to provide less scope for these dialogues. Though newspapers provided someway for comments from the readers, they are moderated and there is space constraints in newspaper space to put only selective comments and in case of magazines, you need to wait for 1-2 weeks before your comment gets published/answered. In case of blogs though there is some moderation from the authors more often, comments get published. Space constraints are unheard of, giving it a democratic space to voice opinion. When somebody comments on my blog I make sure that I answer their query if any and these 2 years have taught me how to handle the aggressive and witty commentators and accept the compliments from the like minds! It would not be out of place to say that this has certainly changed the way I communicate with people whether verbally or in a written communication.

That was a scattered account of my experience as a blogger. Well, I would like to hear feedback from you, the readers, as you had always done in my earlier posts. Also, I want to know what kind of posts you liked to read in this blog and whats that new genre you would like me to explore. Your comments are valuable in this regard.

Thats all folks, its Raveesh, the blogger signing off for now, ending yet another blogging week! See you soon. :)

Bangalore Sightseeing : Big Banyan Tree, Manchinabele Backwaters

Saturday mornings are usually dull as there is no hurry to catch the office cab or BMTC bus to reach office. So, when Shande invited me for a bike trip to Big Banyan Tree(Dodda Aalada Mara), Ramohalli and Manchinabele backwaters on the outskirts of Bangalore, I readily agreed. But Shande had made sure that I woke up early at 6 AM, earlier than the time to wake up in office days! This was to see that we escape the horrible traffic in Mysore road in the mornings. Big Banyan Tree, Ramohalli, BangaloreBig Banyan Tree : Well, I started from Vijayanagar and reached Nayandahalli from where Shande picked me at 7 30 AM. Bike ride was not even 25 minutes when we reached Big Banyan Tree at Ramohalli. Plan was to have breakfast here, wander around the dodda aalada mara and then proceed towards Manchinabele dam. As the full gang of 11 people was yet to assemble at the spot, me, Shande and Subhajit started our photographic adventure! Big banyan tree is spread across 3 acres and provides photographers with the opportunities to shoot in different perspectives. We tried to find main root of the tree without any success but later I came to know that it was succumbed to a natural disease. After the first photo session we had our breakfast in the nearby hotel and got ready to shoot for the second time, this time monkeys which are abundant around the big tree!Bird's View of Manchinabele BackwatersManchinabele Dam/Backwaters : Big banyan tree also houses Shri Muneshwara Swamy temple. After our visit to dodda aalada mara, we headed towards Manchinabele dam which is about 8 kms from Ramohalli. Well, for the resort enthusiasts here is an info – Ruppis Hotel & Resort by Kannada actor Upendra is nearby Big Banyan Tree. Further, road towards Manchinabele dam was in pathetic condition as it was not asphalted and it was understandable too, as on the way we found facilities being setup with all those hi-fi antennas for Chandrayan mission 2010 by ISRO(Indian Space Research Organization) and so new roads were being laid. Manchinabele Backwaters with Savanadurga in the backgroundManchinabele dam was not too far and we reached soon there. Backwaters at the dam with Savanadurga on the backdrop, give the place picturesque look. No short of SLRs and other Digicams, gang was on for photographic expedition as soon as we reached the place. We had stopped at the rocky area near the dam to take some photos and have some snacks as it was already past 12. Chit chats and exclamations of the beautiful place followed.Manchinabele surroundings resembling Kashmir valley! Our next stop was to stop at the banks of the river which was known for bird watching. Not a variety of birds though as Brahminy kite was prominent among the eagles in the place. Birds are at a striking distance and care is required while carrying cameras. One could also find cranes though they were less in number. Well, surroundings near the river offer you cool breeze to escape from hot sun. Savanadurga, largest monolith hill in Asia, seemed quite near from here. Other than birds in motion there was not much to see. Facing the Manchinabele backwaters was the hilly area in the above picture. What caught my attention was its striking resemblance to Kashmir valley!

Mukthi Naaga Temple, Ramohalli : On our way back to Bangalore city we went to Mukthi Naaga Temple near Ramohalli. Mukthi Naaga statue is 12 feet tall, 36 tonne weight is the largest Naga statue I had seen. Mukthi Naaga temple is known for its naga dosha nivarane powers.( Naga dosha/Sarpa Dosha was in the news recently when ace Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar made a visit to Kukke Subramanya Temple, Subramanya, 105 kms from Mangalore, seeking solutions for Naga Dosha.) Mukthi Naaga Temple, Ramohalli, BangaloreTemple is now being expanded into Mukthi Naaga Temple complex which will have 125 feet Mahadwara/Rajagopura, Navagraha temples, Kshetra Palaka Temple, Patladamma temple, Aadimukthi Naaga Temple, 1008 Nagabana, Annapurna Meals hall, Chikka Palani, Go Shala, Dharmadarshi Bhavan and Dharmadarshi house. After the darshan at the temple we were on our way back home.

How to reach Big Banyan Tree(Dodda Aalada Mara), Ramohalli :
On the Mysore road take right turn near Rajarajeshwari Engineering College. Ramohalli is 7km away from there.

This blog post gives a brief report and my perspective on the seminar organised by enthusiasts of in co-operation with Christ College of Law on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Christ College of Law, Bangalore in Kannada. Speakers on this occasion were - Prakash Belavadi, well known director of Kannada,English plays/movies, Prakash Kambatalli of 'Ankita Pustaka', well established Kannada publshing house, G Tulsiram Naidu (Lahari Velu), owner of 'Lahari' Audio Company, Guruprasad K R, director who came to limelight with Kannada film 'Matha' and T J Yatheendranath, co-founder of Adamya group of companies.

5 things I liked about 5 Point Someone

Chetan's first book was lately read by me in 2008, with the book being released way back in 2004. But the charm of the book is still not lost, even after 4 years of its first publication and it is still topping the best sellers list in India. So, I am not presenting the review of the book here, but things I liked about the book while reading, mostly drawing similarities between IITians and non-IITians. For the non-starters, Five Point Someone is a fictional work by Chetan Bhagat about 3 friends - Hari, Alok and Ryan in an IIT.

Our Language: Chetan speaks our language, language of youth which enables him to reach the majority of young indians through his writings. Though novel is set up in an IIT background, the scenarios depicted by him is pretty much similar to other engineering colleges in India, with most of the engineering under-graduates speaking the same lingo, as he has presented with over emphasis on some special 'key' words! Five Point Someone Cover PageDreaded Viva: I think atleast some of us, engineering students, used to shiver and most of us used to develop a healthy fear during those lab exam days. That is one of the reasons for Hari, one of the 3 characters to feel uncomfortable during the grilling viva-voce and he goes to the extent of attending viva after having vodka to overcome the fear, only possible in novels! This fear among students is not without reason as in the case of other engineeing colleges, professors from rival colleges who come for lab viva try to settle scores by means of this dreaded tool and make life miserable for the students like Hari. But the question always remains as who started the trend first: the professors from this college who had gone to other colleges or is it other way! Atleast IIT guys should be lucky in this regard as these institutions are autonomous and vivas are conducted by in-house faculty only! Is it right to assume so?

Placement Scenario: Placement scenario is almost the same in decent engineering colleges as in IITs nowadays, with software companies knocking the door of every possible engineering college to hire talent, leave alone the higher pay packages IITians get. Here, the cutoff aggregate percentages are 60-70% as they vary from company to company. This aspect do worry students at the beginning of 6th semester. Aggregate percentage below this is as good as five pointer in IIT but unlike in IITs there is no relative grading of students! Also, as in the case of novel's characters, Alok and Hari, companies arriving for recruitement last, relax the eligibility criteria little bit.

Lots of Ryans! Characters like Ryan can be found in almost every second guy you meet in any engineering college bashing their own college and then the University for the same reasons as Ryan's like mugging up the portions, no original thinking etc etc. The 'novel' idea of Cooperate to Dominate extended here as well, as assignments if at all given carried little or no weightage and so, mass copying was common and semester projects, that was another story in itself! Well, Chetan indicates how it is important to make a balance between the usual routine stuff in the colleges and the original thinking.

Other than IITs: At the end of the novel, Chetan does not forget to mention that it is not only the IITs which produces quality engineers in India. This has been depicted as a speech made by Prof.Cherian, Head of the Department, Mechanical Engineering in Hari's dreams, which might indicate how this viewpoint is not yet fully accepted. Also, he stresses on the point that it is not the end of the world, if you dont get into IITs.
