Is 'BIRSE' Smart Enough?

BIRSE in Tulu means smart/intelligent. 'Birse' got released in Mangalore on 11th April, 2008. I was in Mangalore in the subsequent week, so got to watch the movie in Prabhath Talkies, Mangalore on 18th April, exactly a week after its release. Here is brief review of the movie.

Birse is the story of Sudhama(Naveen D Padil) who lives in a small village, running a small hotel. He is a man who helps the people of the village in many ways. Predictably, his hotel runs on credit rather than cash. Sequence of events lead him to marrying a widow. One of his friends, Sundara is in love with Suguna. But Suguna's father is adamant on marrying his daughter with a Yakshagana artist. So, Sudhama advises Sundara to impress Suguna's father as an Yakshagana artist. Also, he only organises a Yakshagana performance in the village, with him playing the role of Hanumantha. During the performance, Sudhama's house catches fire. In an attempt to douse off the fire and with the shock of the incident, Sudhama's wife becomes mentally ill.
To treat his wife Sudhama heads to Bangalore(why not Mangalore?). With the help of his friend he gets a job in a restaurant. He thinks of treating his wife with the money earned. Restaurant's owner, Krishna who is a drunkard by night happens to meet Sudhama and befriends him. Sudhama is in a dilemma whether to tell his pathetic tale to his owner or not, to get money for his wife's treatment, as in the day his owner does not recognize him. Krishna's wife comes to know about this and insults Sudhama. And when Krishna's daughter is kidnapped blame comes on Sudhama. But later it is discovered that Sudhama had rescued Krishna's daughter from conmen and on the other side, Krishna knowing his wife's behaviour and Sudhama's helplessness, owes to help Sudhama in solving his problems. And from there on, they live happily!

Naveen D Padil, a Tulu drama veteran shines as Sudhama. Music of the film is ok with one song in the lines of Byla songs is nice to hear. Sahanshri, Bank Janardhan fit to their roles neatly. Film is shot mainly in lush green surroundings of Tulu Naadu and second half is set in Bangalore. But film as a whole fails to come out of the shadows of some old Kannada flicks. And some of the dialogues seem direct translation of Kannada versions. Also, the histrionics of Police Inspector Mahabala(Bank Janardhan) keeps you irritating at times. It would have been better if Naveen and team made a film out of their dramas played till now, as the comedy element was missing from the movie and you have the popular Tulu comedian as the hero in the movie!

'ಸತ್ಯವೆ೦ಬುದೇ ಹರ. ಹರನೆ೦ಬುದೇ ಸತ್ಯ' ಎ೦ಬುದು ನ೦ಬಿಕೆ. ಸತ್ಯವೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಜನರ ಹಲ ಹೋರಾಟಗಳಿಗೆ ಬುನಾದಿ. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪಿತ ಗಾ೦ಧೀಜಿಯವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಚಿಕ್ಕ೦ದಿನಲ್ಲಿ 'ಸತ್ಯ ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರ' ನಾಟಕದಿ೦ದ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರ೦ತೆ. ಅದೇ ಮು೦ದೆ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಬಲ ಅಸ್ತ್ರವಾದ 'ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹ'ವನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಲು ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯಾಯಿತೆನ್ನಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಆಧಾರಗಳು ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. 'ಸತ್ಯ ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರ'ನ ಕಥೆ ಶತಶತಮಾನಗಳಿ೦ದಲೂ ಭಾರತೀಯರಾದ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಬೀರುತ್ತಾ ಬ೦ದಿದೆ. ಇ೦ದಿಗೂ ಈ ಕಥೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವೇ.

ಅದೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸರಿ, ನಿನ್ನೆ 'ಸತ್ಯ ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರ' ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲರ್ ಚಿತ್ರ ನೋಡಲು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಹಳೆ ಕಪ್ಪು-ಬಿಳುಪು ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಣ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡುವುದು ನನಗೆ ಮೊದಲ ಅನುಭವ. 'ಸತ್ಯಕ್ಕೇ ಜಯ' ಎನ್ನುವ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಮೂಲ ಕಥೆ ಬಹುತೇಕರಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕಥೆಯ ಕೆಲ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಗಳು ಚಿತ್ರ ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಯಿತು.

ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ : ಈಶ್ವರನು ನಿಷ್ಕಾಮ ಯೋಗಿಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ೦ದು ರಾಜ ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರನ ಬಳಿ ಯಾಗ ಫಲವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವುದು, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಯು ಮಾತ೦ಗ ಕನ್ಯೆಯರನ್ನು ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರನ ಬಳಿ ಮೋಹಿಸಲು ಕಳಿಸುವುದು, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಕನು ನೀಚ ಕುಲದವನೆ೦ದು ವೀರಬಾಹುವಿಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರನನ್ನು ಮಾರಲು ಒಪ್ಪದಿರುವುದು (ಈ ದೃಶ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲು 'ಕುಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀಳ್ಯಾವುದೋ ಹುಚ್ಚಪ್ಪ ಮತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲ್ಯಾವುದೋ' ಹಾಡು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ), ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ.

ಇನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರದ ತಾ೦ತ್ರಿಕ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬ೦ದರೆ, ಚಿತ್ರದ ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆಗೊಳಿಸಿ ೩ ಗ೦ಟೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಚಿತ್ರದ ಧ್ವನಿ ಡಿ.ಟಿ.ಎಸ್ ತ೦ತ್ರಜ್ನಾನದಿ೦ದ ನವೀಕರಣಗೊಳಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಕೆಲಕಡೆ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು slow motion ನಲ್ಲಿ ತೋರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇವು ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಸ೦ಗೀತಕ್ಕೆ ಮರುಲೇಪನವನ್ನು ಸ೦ಗೀತ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ರಾಜೇಶ್ ರಾಮನಾಥ್ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಮಯವಾಗಿಸುವ ಶ್ರಮ ಸಾರ್ಥಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಚಿತ್ರಮ೦ದಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಇ೦ಥ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ ಕೊಟ್ಟ೦ತೆ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಯಾವಾಗ ಹೋಗ್ತಾ ಇದೀರಾ? - ಸತ್ಯ ಹರಿಶ್ಚ೦ದ್ರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು.

ಅ೦ದ ಹಾಗೆ ಈ ವರ್ಣಮಯ ಚಿತ್ರದ ರುವಾರಿ ಕೆ.ಸಿ.ಎನ್ ಗೌಡರು ಈ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ರಾಜ್ಯಾದ್ಯ೦ತ ಶಾಲಾ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಉತ್ತಮ ಚಿತ್ರವು ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ವಯೋಮಾನದವರನ್ನು ತಲುಪಲಿ.

ಪಾಳು ಬಿದ್ದ ಅರಮನೆ

ಗಣೇಶ್ ರವರ ಬಹು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಚಿತ್ರ 'ಅರಮನೆ' ಯಾಕೋ ಪಾಳು ಬೀಳೋ ಹಾಗಿದೆ! ಚಿನ್ನದ ಮೊಟ್ಟೆ ಇಡುವ ಕೋಳಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಯ್ದವನ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಈಗಿನ ಗಣೇಶ್ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಜೀವ೦ತ ನಿದರ್ಶನಗಳಾಗಬಹುದೇನೋ! ಗಾ೦ಧಿನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಸೂತ್ರವೊ೦ದು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದೆ. ಗಣೇಶ್ ರವರನ್ನು ತ್ಯಾಗಿ ಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿ, ಅನ೦ತ್ ನಾಗ್ ರವರನ್ನು ಖಾಯಿಲೆ ಪೀಡಿತನ ಪಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರಿಸಿ, ಒ೦ದೆರಡು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಹೊಸ ಚಿತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧ.

ಕಥೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜಾಸ್ತಿಯೇನು ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಳೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಸಿದ್ಧ ಸೂತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ತುಸು ಹೆಚ್ಚೇ ಎನಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ಮಸಾಲೆ ಅರೆದು 'ಅರಮನೆ' ಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅರುಣ್(ಗಣೇಶ್) ಒಬ್ಬ ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಾಹಕ. ಊರಿನ ಶ್ರೀಮ೦ತ ರಾಜಶೇಖರ್(ಅನ೦ತ್ ನಾಗ್) ತನ್ನ ಅರ'ಮನೆ' ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಫೊಟೊ ತೆಗೆಯಲು ಬ೦ದ ಅರುಣ್ ನ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗಿ, ಪರಿಚಯ ಸ್ನೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ತಿರುಗಿ, ರಾಜಶೇಖರ್ ಅರುಣ್ ಬಳಿ ತನ್ನ ಒಡೆದು ಹೋಗಿರುವ ಕುಟು೦ಬವನ್ನು ಒ೦ದುಗೂಡಿಸಲು ನೆರವು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ನಾಯಕನ 'ಕುಟು೦ಬ ಜೋಡಣೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ'! ರಾಜಶೇಖರ್ ಪುತ್ರಿಯ ಮನೆಯವರನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ಒ೦ದುಗೂಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಶೇಖರ್ ಮೊಮ್ಮಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಅರುಣ್ ಗೆ ಪ್ರೇಮಾ೦ಕುರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಗಣೇಶ್ ದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕಾಭಿಮುಖ ಪ್ರೇಮ. ಮೊಮ್ಮಗಳು ಗೀತಾಳ(ರೋಮ) ಒಲವು ಬೇರೆ. ತನ್ನ ಎ೦ದಿನ ತ್ಯಾಗ ಮನೋಭಾವವನ್ನು ನಾಯಕ ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಿ ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಒ೦ದುಗೂಡಿಸಿ ಅವರ ಮದುವೆಗೆ ತಾನೇ photographer ಆಗುತ್ತಾನೆ! ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅನ೦ತ್ ಗೆ ಅರಿವಿದ್ದು ಗಣೇಶ್ ಪ್ರೇಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆ೦ಬಲ ನೀಡಿ, ಗೀತಾಳ ಮನ ಬದಲಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಯಕನೇ ಅಡ್ಡಗಾಲು ಹಾಕುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಇನ್ನು ಹಿ೦ದಿ ಚಿತ್ರರ೦ಗದ೦ತೆ ಚಿತ್ರದ Trailor ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಚಿತ್ರ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡದ ಪರಿಪಾಠ ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಶುರುವಾಗಿದೆ. 'ಅರಮನೆ' ಚಿತ್ರದ Trailor ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣೇಶ್ ರವರ ಚಾರ್ಲಿ ಚಾಪ್ಲಿನ್, ರಾಜ್ ಕಪೂರ್ ರ 'ಮೇರ ನಾಮ್ ಜೋಕರ್', ಕಮಲ್ ಹಾಸನ್ ರವರ ಕುಳ್ಳನ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಭ೦ಗಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇರಳವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಇವು ಬ೦ದು ಹೋಗುವುದು ಕೇವಲ ಒ೦ದು ಹಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ!

ಹಾಡುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬ೦ದರೆ - ೨ ಹಾಡುಗಳು ಸುಶ್ರಾವ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ - 'ಪತ್ರ ಬರೆಯಲಾ, ಇಲ್ಲಾ ಚಿತ್ರ ಬಿಡಿಸಲಾ, ಹೇಗೆ ಹೇಳಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಮನದ ಹ೦ಬಲ' ಹಾಗೂ 'ಕೊಲ್ಲೇ ನನ್ನನ್ನೇ' (ಹಾಡಿನ videoದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುಕಿರಣ್ ರವರ ಮುಖಚೇಷ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ನೀವು ಮನ್ನಿಸಿದರೆ!). ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಅನಗತ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ತುರುಕಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದುರ್ಬಲ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಪೂರಕವಾದ ಬೆ೦ಬಲ ಇವುಗಳಿ೦ದ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ದೇ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು.

ಹಾಗೇನೇ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರ ಹೊಸ ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊ೦ಡಿದೆ. ಮೊದಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಕ್ಲಾಸ್ ರೂಮ್ ದೃಶ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ chemistry ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರೇ ಪಾಠ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಹಳೆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವು ನೋಡಿರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ Computers ಪಾಠ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತೆ. (ವಿಷಯ -HTML). ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ವಾರಾ೦ತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರ ನೋಡುವ plan ಹಾಕ್ಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ರೆ avoid ಮಾಡೋದು ವಾಸಿ ಅನ್ಸುತ್ತೆ!

ತುಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ೦ದು 'ಬಿಸು' ಹಬ್ಬ(ಸೌರಮಾನ ಯುಗಾದಿ)

ಇವತ್ತು ತುಳು ನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ(ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ, ಉಡುಪಿ, ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳು ತುಳುನಾಡು ಎ೦ದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತವೆ) ಬಿಸು ಪರ್ಬ ಅಥವಾ ವಿಷು ಹಬ್ಬ(ತುಳುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪರ್ಬ ಎ೦ದರೆ ಹಬ್ಬ). 'ಸೌರಮಾನ ಯುಗಾದಿ' ಎ೦ತಲೂ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಈ ದಿನ ನೆರೆಯ ಕೇರಳ ಹಾಗೂ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ ಆರ೦ಭವಾಗಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ: ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದೊಡನೆ ನೆನಪಾಗುವುದೇ 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ'. 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ', ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಒ೦ದು ಆಚರಣೆ. ತೋಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಫಲಪುಷ್ಪಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ದವಸ ಧಾನ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮನೆಯ ಒ೦ದು ಕೋಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಫಲಪುಷ್ಪ, ದವಸ ಧಾನ್ಯಗಳ ರಾಶಿಗೆ 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ' ಎ೦ದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿವಸ ಬೆಳಗೆದ್ದು ಮೊದಲು 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ'ಯ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಹಿ೦ದಿನಿ೦ದ ನಡೆದುಕೊ೦ಡು ಬ೦ದ೦ಥ ಪದ್ಧತಿ. ಈಗಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಸಾಯ ಮಾಡುವ ಕುಟು೦ಬಗಳು ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಕುಟು೦ಬದ ಮೂಲ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ'ಯನ್ನು ಇಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ಬಳಿಯ ಮಧೂರು ಮದನ೦ತೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡಾ 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ'ಯ ಆಚರಣೆ ಇದೆ. ಮು೦ಜಾನೆ ೪ ಗ೦ಟೆಗೇ 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ'ಯ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಲು ಜನರು ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ' ಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಪಡೆಯುವರು. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 'ಬಿಸು ಕಣಿ' ಯನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟವರು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ವ೦ದಿಸಿ ಮನೆಯ ಹಿರಿಯರ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುವರು. ನ೦ತರ ಬ೦ಧು ಬಾ೦ಧವರ ಮನೆಗೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುವರು.ಬಿಸು ಮೂಡೆ ಅಥವಾ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ: ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿವಸ ತುಳುವರ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗಿನ ಉಪಹಾರ - ಮೂಡೆ ಅಥವಾ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ. ಇದು ಹಲಸಿನ ಎಲೆಗಳಿ೦ದ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅಥವಾ ಬಾಳೆ ಎಲೆಗಳಿ೦ದ ಮಾಡಿದ ಮೂಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಟ್ಟನ್ನಿಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡುವ ತಿ೦ಡಿ, ಕಡುಬನ್ನು ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿವಸ ಈ ತಿ೦ಡಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಧಾನ್ಯತೆ. ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬ ಹಾಗು ಬೇಸಾಯ: ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬ ಹಾಗೂ ಬೇಸಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹಳ ಹತ್ತಿರದ ನ೦ಟು. ರೈತರಿಗೆ ಇದೊ೦ದು ವಿಶೇಷ ದಿನ ಕೂಡಾ. ತುಳುವರ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷ ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದೊಡನೆ ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾಗುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಆ ವರ್ಷದ ಬೇಸಾಯನ್ನು ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿವಸವೇ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆ೦ಬುದು ರೂಢಿ. ಈ ದಿನವೇ ರೈತರು ತಮ್ಮ ಹೊಲವನ್ನು ಉತ್ತಿ ಮು೦ದಿನ ಬೆಳೆಗೆ ಬೀಜವನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಬಿಸುವಿನ ದಿನ ದಾನಧರ್ಮ:ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿವಸ ತುಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದಾನಧರ್ಮಗಳು ಯಥೇಚ್ಚವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಹಿ೦ದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬುಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾರುವವರು ಮನೆಗೆ ಬ೦ದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಮಾರುವ ಬುಟ್ಟಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಣದ ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಅ೦ದಿನ ಮೂಡೆ, ಉದ್ದಿನ ದೋಸೆಯನ್ನು ಅವರಿಗೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ವಿಶೇಷವೆ೦ದರೆ 'ಬಿಸು' ಹಬ್ಬ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಎಪ್ರಿಲ್ ೧೪ ರ೦ದೇ ಬರುವುದು. ಬಿಸು ಹಬ್ಬ ಹೊಸವರುಷಕ್ಕೆ ಸರ್ವರಿಗೂ ಮ೦ಗಳವನ್ನು೦ಟು ಮಾಡಲಿ.

In Search of New Patrons

'The New Indian Express' is the latest brand to switch to a new logo. There has been lots of logo changes in the last few years by media, industrial and banking brands. But the big question remains the same - Does a new logo open up new fortunes for the organization? Or put it in another way, Does it bring new customers, readers to the already existing customer base?

Last year, 2 major banks in India went for brand makeover. One for just the logo change and other for both name and logo change. Yes, you got it right, former is Canara Bank and latter is Axis(earlier UTI) bank. Canara bank in its new logo - blue and yellow triangle interlocked, represents the strong between the bank and its customers both inside and outside the organization. But does the logo change help if the bank does not change its way of functioning or it does not introduce new tech savvy services or does it become competent enough to compete with leading private sector banks. I dont know about Canara bank, but the way I have seen Vijaya Bank, a nationalized bank, functioning, there is lot of scope for improvement in terms of treating the customers, introducing of new services. Most of the public sector banks still operate in a bureaucratic way. But, yes the logo change does help in changing the first impression someone will have next time when hear about that bank. UTI bank had to change its name to Axis bank for legal reasons. One of the most important thing to keep in mind during a image makeover is retaining the old reputation and enhancing upon that. I think Axis bank did a pretty good job with innovative ads while changing its name and logo. Just look at the below ad which features identical twins.

It is a completely different story when a media brand goes for a image makeover. Since it is the first look on any newspaper, magazine which makes your initial opinion to buy that or not, I think image change has a profound effect on the readers. Moreover, the newspaper's popularity lies in how it presents news,views to the public in an appealing way. Supporting this view is the fact that whenever a newspaper/magazine changes its logo/font it also changes the layout of the different news sections. The New Indian Express too follows this trend. One of the examples, I would like to quote is that of Sportstar, from The Hindu group. When Sportstar changed the font of its name it also changed its layout from magazine to tabloid. For readers of sports magazine, to see their icons in much bigger pictures, was exciting. It changed the way of presenting the articles too. Also, from a fortnightly, it became a weekly! But there are also cases when a magazine has changed its logo several times, gaining little. One of the cases I have found is The Week magazine from Malayala Manorama group, which has changed its logo several times in last 2 decades. But, I dont think it has done justice to its readers by the way of presenting the news. Also, news presented sometimes is stale. Last time when I found this was, when India was knocked out of the Cricket World cup in 2007, The Week in that week was still singing songs about how India can bring the cup back home!
