I guess Ganga water might have had some kind of medicinal property so people started using it to cure their physical illness and considered it to cure karmic illness as well :)<br /><br />Recently I was reading somewhere that the flow of Ganga has reduced to less than 10% to what it was few decades back and even the Ganga also the it is polluted almost from the source... If we continue to exploit in the same rate at some time in future we might not loose Ganga as well...
